Parliament Updates

The UK Parliament works on behalf of the whole country to check and challenge Government, and make/shape effective laws. Parliamentary systems are linked to higher levels of human capital, greater openness to trade and better overall economic performance.

This week the Assisted Dying Bill has its Second Reading, MPs question the new Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood and the Chancellor, and a Ten Minute Rule debate on supporting children with SEND issues takes place. Eluned Morgan is quizzed during First Minister’s Questions, the former head of John Lewis Simon White makes his debut, and MPs debate two e-petitions and consider a Ten Minute Rule Bill on indefinite leave to remain. Committees will also take evidence on arms exports to Israel, the Online Safety Act and gilt yields.

In Strasbourg, MEPs endorse a package travel directive reform to secure better protection for travellers in case of tour operator bankruptcy or disruption. They also back a call for a stand-alone post-2027 agriculture budget with less red tape and incentives to achieve environmental and social objectives. MEPs express grave concern at Gaza’s “catastrophic” humanitarian crisis and urge the EU to take urgent action, and encourage the Ukrainian government to continue implementing reforms.
