The earliest known journalistic product was the Acta Diurna, which recorded important daily events and public speeches in ancient Rome. While it’s difficult to determine whether the Daily News had any influence on elections or public policy, its editorial viewpoints and coverage choices tapped into deep veins of populism and ethnonationalism. Its plainspoken tone and willingness to fight for its readers endeared it to many of them.
During the 1970s and 1980s, the Daily News focused on social and economic issues that impacted the working class. Its writers often attacked government policies as soft or effeminate, and criticized the United States’ foreign aid programs as too generous to undeserving nations. Likewise, the paper criticized American cultural policies as too permissive of homosexuals, who it believed were seducing young men. The Daily News also opposed affirmative action in employment and housing, arguing that no job should be earmarked for Blacks unless white jobs were also relegated to the ghetto.
